Pre K-k 

January 2012

 

Nursery Rhyme:  “Pop Goes the Weasel”  all will play the triangle on the word “pop”

 

 

New Song: “Clapping Song”- includes lots of actions including clapping, snapping, climbing etc.

 

 

Theory: Using familiar rhythms already learned, the children will learn to notate these rhythms using felt pieces.  We will start with our rhythm echo game each week and then we will use the felt board.

 

 

Parade:  We will have a rhythm band instrument parade to “Frosty the Snowman” or “March Militaire” each week to get the wiggles out.

 

 

 

New Song:  “Old MacDonald Had a Band”  We never got to really do this one last semester, so we will try it again for Presentation Night.

 

 

 

 


PreK-k 

February 2012 

 

Nursery Rhyme:  “Hot Cross Buns”- history and significance of Hot Cross Buns will be explained and song will be sung.

 

 

Theory: continue using felt board and musical notes.  We will notate the rhythms from “Hot Cross Buns”

 

 

New Song: “God’s Darkness” with actions

 

 

New Song: “Willaby Wallaby Woo” using the names of all of the kids in the class.

 

 

Rehearse: “Old MacDonald Had a Band” switching off instruments and learning to play the instruments as a group.

March 2012 

 

Nursery Rhyme: “London Bridge” with game (going under the bridge and getting “locked up”) 

 

We will be putting together signs with our names on them for “Willaby Wallaby Woo”

 

Rehearsal for Presentation Night could include:

Grades 2 & 3

January 2012

 

 

Composer of the Month (Jan & half of February): Franz Schubert “March Militaire”

  • Read about his life, listen to “March Militaire” and crossword puzzle
  • Schubert was famous for writing over 600 songs.  We will learn one of them.  Definition of Art Song.  What is the difference between an Art Song and a folk song?
  • “Unfinished Symphony” why was it called unfinished?  Listen to first movement
  • Listen to second movement.  Read more about him and complete worksheet

 

Theory: We will use hand bells to learn about the major scale and how it works.

 

Recorder: We will go over the notes we have already learned as a review for these two weeks.  I have sheets with review songs to give the students.

 

New Song: “Timothy’s Flute”  This song introduces a couple of new notes on the recorder.  We will learn to sing it these two weeks and learn it on recorder in February.

Grades 2 & 3

February 2012

 

Composer of the Month: Franz Schubert:  We will finish learning about the “Unfinished Symphony” and Art Songs.

 

Recorder:  We will learn new notes D and E and we will learn to play “Timothy’s Flute” on the recorder.

 

Theory:  I will dictate melodies using the recorder….B A and G only

 

New Song:  “Telling Time”  The students will learn this song and they will learn to play it using the hand bells and solfege.

 

New Song: “Saint Patrick”  ………..for March………..teaches Trinity

 

New Song:  “It’s a Small World”

 

Song & Dance: “Shoo Fly”  We will learn the song the first week and then begin learning the dance that goes with it during the second week.

 

“Circle Round the Zero” if time because they WILL ASK

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Grades 2&3

March 2012

 

Composer: John Williams-  They will recognize much of his music from the movies.  We will also learn about his life and writing music for movies.

 

Practice for Presentation Night:

  • Timothy’s Flute (sung then recorder)
  • Telling Time (acc. On hand bells)
  • Saint Patrick (maybe St. Patrick’s day as well?)
  • It’s a Small World

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Grades 4-6

January 2012

Recorder:  In depth review of all notes learned using books. Students will be assigned songs in books to review.  Hand outs as well.

Week two, we also will begin to learn the C major scale on our recorders.  This lesson will go into February and March.

 

 

New Song: “Rain Dance”  We will learn to sing this song and we will learn the various rhythms that accompany the song.  This piece although short, will take some work to play in parts using jingle bells and hand drums.

 

 

New Song: “Oh Susanna”

 


 Grades 4-6

February 2012

 

 

Composer of the Month: 

  • Franz Schubert Students will finish studying “Unfinished Symphony”. 
  • They will learn the song “Slumber Song” and they will learn to accompany themselves using hand bells for Presentation Night.

 

Recorder:  Warm up using C major scale.  Do this scale as a round (follow the leader) teacher vs. students.  Weeks 3 & 4 split into two groups and perform as a round.  Learn song: “When the Saints Go Marching In”

 

Rehearse:  “Rain Dance” every week.  Each week learn a new instrumental part and add it into the song.  Parts will include jingle bells, hand drums and hand bells.

 

Rehearse: “Oh Susanna”

 

Song & Dance:  “Little Johnny Brown” African American song and dance from the coastal Georgia Islands.  Students will learn the history of the song as well as how to play the dance/game.

 

 

 

 

 


Grades 4-6

March 2012

 

Composer: John Williams- They will recognize much of his music from the movies.  We will also learn about his life and writing music for movies.

They will also be given fingering charts and the “Star Wars” theme to try over the spring/summer.

 

 

Practice for Presentation night:

  • C major scale in round
  • When the Saints Come Marching In (recorder)
  • Oh Suzannah (sung with guitar)
  • Rain Dance (accompanying instruments)
  • Slumber Song (accompanied by handbells) MAYBE
